M.U.R.D.E.R. THE SECRET TO STUDYING BETTER AND MORE EFFECTIVELY

At times, studying can be extremely frustrating and stressful. There are moments when the piles of papers and books are staring straight at you and all you want to do is flip them up in the air and leave them to rot on the floor. Fortunately, there are tons of study techniques out there that help lessen this frustration. One of them involves M.U.R.D.E.R.

M.U.R.D.E.R. stands for moodunderstandrecalldigestexpand, and review. The M.U.R.D.E.R. study method provides a systematic process of taking in the material that results in successful studying. And though they might be quite similar, the M.U.R.D.E.R. method provides an alternative approach to studying.

Mood:

Some people need to get in the zone before they could start processing information effectively. To get into the mood, you first have to set a proper mindset before you start studying. Try to relax and clear your mind. You can set the time where you feel most productive for studying. You can also create an environment where you are comfortable but not too comfortable to fall asleep.

Understand:

When you start studying, make sure you have a good idea of what topics you need to study. A highlighter, pen, and a piece of paper could also come in handy for you to mark or list down the topics you didn’t fully understand. Also, remember to tackle your materials bit by bit to help you avoid overloading yourself with information and better improve your understanding and memory of the topics.

Recall:

After covering a chapter or topic, stop and recall what you’ve just learned. You can do this by reciting the summary out loud, writing it down in your own words, or answering some practice questions if there are some.

Digest:

To truly commit information to mind, you must remember that it’s more about digesting and understanding the information rather than just simply memorizing it. If you still have some topics you have difficulty understanding, take your time and get back to them. You can even consult other expert sources on other books, the internet, and even your professors.

Expand:

One of the ways you could truly digest a topic is to expand your knowledge about it. You can do this by connecting it to previous lessons or finding things in your life that it applies to. You could also ask yourself questions like “How do I connect this to something I like?” or “How could I make this information interesting to others who don’t know about it?”

Review:

Studying or reviewing doesn’t end after one review session even though you’ve managed to cover everything. Set a schedule for yourself and every so often, review the most important parts and the parts that you’ve highlighted. This is for you to really commit them to memory and ensure that you’ve understood and taken the topic to heart.
